Excuse to Rape?

here Could pornography be given as a reason for a vicious rape assault on a 5 year old? Apparently yes. The idea has triggered a huge debate in India with Sunny Leone, Indian-Canadian porn star, starred in Jism 2 dragged into limelight for her dual career as a porn-star.

Not that I defend pornography in any which way, but for those who believe she should be sent to jail for promoting lascivious material that instigates people specifically for rape, I’d exhort that we should send all the action-heroes to jails as well for promoting aggression and violence in the society.

Our society and even those who claim to know about it are still groping in dark about its culture and values and essentially what engenders rape. And so they tend to associate a plentiful of myths and concoctions about the whys and why-nots. 1) Women should avoid revealing dresses and seductive attires that could invite men to rape them or 2) they should not go out alone especially late, as this would increase their chances of being raped, and now it’s pornography, which is linked with rape.

One could never rule out pornography entirely for being a reason why anyone might rape, but the rule of the thumb says that rape is rarely a crime of passion; it is an act of violence towards women. And the only thing that lures men into raping women is her vulnerability and victimizer’s awareness of the fact that laws are on his side. Also, the fact that since reporting a rape crime would only call for the survivor’s humiliation- thanks to the society that refrains from talking about the taboo-rape, it allows the criminal a safe exit by encouraging the victim into shh-silence.

Another common reason why rape is attempted in our region is to avenge the person or her tribe. We sadly belong to a part of world that refuses to give a woman her own identity and to accept her anything other than a fragile object incapable of protecting herself. She’s an object that belongs to her father, brother, husband or even her clan. What better way to punish them than to abduct their thing.

For those who believe rape crimes are committed because of sexual frustration or to seek sexual gratifications, the reality is these crimes are pre-meditated and planned for may be weeks, days or even months. They are not just done in a spur or in an impulse, the criminal chalks out a plan that may involve others as well, to execute it and then carry it out.

Also,  while following moderate fashion and ethical code may be of several benefits to the wearer,  it should certainly not fall under the precautions  to avoid being raped. For if so, we should lash on the law-enforcement agencies that deny us our right to be free and walk on streets without fearing some beast might devour us to meet his perverted ends.

In the end I’d like to mention something that may say it all,

“Men should be offended when someone claims that women should prevent rape:

a)      by not wearing certain things

b)      by not going certain places

c)      or not acting in a certain way

That line of thinking presumes that you are incapable of control.

That you are so base and uncivilized that it takes extra-ordinary effort for you to walk down the street without raping someone.

That you require a certain dress code be maintained,

That certain behaviors be employed so may be today,

Just may be

You won’t rape someone.

It presumes that your natural state is RAPIST.
